ECON: Work for the Week of April 2-5, 2012

The final week of the 5th 6-weeks, a short week (only Monday-Thursday) will see us working on some stuff in the textbook. We will work in Chapters 8-9. Do not forget to make sure that ALL work is turned in ASAP! There is a pretty large amount of missing work, so if you would like me to grade said work, I need it soon. You will need your textbook on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks for the continued good work, but make sure that you are paying attention to deadlines - too much work gets turned in late. You have 1 more 6-weeks, plus this week: DO GREAT WORK!

US HIST: Work for the Week of April 2-5, 2012

This week we will be working on Chapter 24: The Vietnam War. We will continue to take notes, but this week the objective is to talk through the main issues presented in the chapter as a class and in groups (less writing and more (PRODUCTIVE) talking. Next week I will also be collecting money ($12.00) for those who wanted a class shirt (I hope you told me if you wanted one - I thought more would be ordered). Do not forget that next that next Thursday (the 5th) is the final day of this 6-weeks. If you have any missing work that you would like me to grade, please get it to me ASAP! My grade book is nearly closed - make sure you get all the points you should have (there's still a large amount of missing work - check your GradeSpeed). Many people have been doing great work lately! Your teacher has been impressed! Please continue.

This week we will be starting our next unit on Market Structures (Ch. 7), Employment-Labor-and Wages (Ch. 8), Sources of Government Revenue (Ch. 9), and Government Spending (Ch. 10). We will also really focus on our stocks and do some work so you better know your stock and understand why your stock is where it is today from where it was when we started. ***Please note that Tuesday could be a little interesting as I have to proctor the SATs to my juniors and might not be there. I'll let you know Monday what we will be doing.*** We are going to be doing lots of work and taking notes, please bring paper, a pen, and yourself to class everyday. We have some really good work coming up that will help you continue to help you understand how to be a successful adult, at least in terms of Economics! Please be prepared and get ready for some good learning!

US HIST: Quick Recap of What We Have Learned So Far (2nd Semester)

Cold War: Causes of the Cold War
1. The fate of Eastern Europe: Would it become Communist?
2. Control of nuclear weapons: Would the US allow the atomic bomb to be placed under international control?
3. Postwar Economic Assistance: Would the Soviet Union receive economic aid from the United States?
4. Soviet threats to Greece and Turkey
The Cold War Evolves:
1. The Truman Doctrine: The US promises military and economic assistance to any country threatened by Communism.
2. Marshall Plan: Massive US economic aid to Western Europe.
3. Division of Germany into East (pro Soviet) and West (pro US) Germany
4. Berlin Blockade: East Germany blocks transportation to West Berlin; US responds with a massive airlift
5. NATO: The US and Canada and Western Europe form a military alliance. The Soviets and their allies respond by forming the Warsaw Pact
6. The Cold War escalates when Communists take over China in 1949, the Soviet Union develops an atomic bomb, and war breaks out on the Korean peninsula.  The Korean War ends in a draw after China intervenes on behalf of North Korea. Some 60,000 Americans died during the war.
7. The Cold War expanded into the developing world, with the US assisting in the overthrow of governments in Iran and Guatemala.
8. The US and Soviet Union came close to nuclear war when the Soviets installed offensive nuclear missiles in Cuba after the US tried to overthrow the Cuban government in the Bay of Pigs invasion.
Post WW2 US:
1. Anti-Communisma. McCarthyism:  Senator Joe McCarthy claimed that communists had infiltrated the US government.
b. Red Scare: Fear of communist subversion.

3. The Rise of the Sunbelt (the South and West)
4. The Interstate Highway System
The New Frontier and the Great Society:
1. The New Frontier was the name of President John Kennedy's agenda and the Great Society was President Lyndon Johnson's agenda.
2. The 1960s saw a host of liberal social programs enacted, mainly under President Lyndon Johnson.
3. Johnson's Great Society instituted Medicare, Medicaid, aid to college students, a war on poverty, and programs to help the environment.

ECON: The School Week Before Spring Break!!!

Spring Break eve is what this week is called in ECON. In class we will be working on The Economics of Social Networking and Moneyball and our stock projects. The Chapters 4-6 TEST is on Tuesday. There will be grades taken with each thing that we do, so please do not procrastinate. I will also name the first set of people who qualify for FINALS EXEMPTION (these will be the people who if they continue what they have done will be exempt from the final). The list is on the small end (5 out of 37), so make sure you are doing ALL THAT YOU CAN DO to be exempt. Attendance, conduct, and grade are the factors that go into consideration.
Too much work is currently missing (please check your GRADESPEED). I know you are busy, but half the class did not turn in a project (major grade) and/or did not turn in the book work. Procrastination is destroying people's grades so... if you owe me work: turn it in ASAP for some points which is better than the no points!!! This class has been very generous with the due dates on EVERY assignment and everyone needs to make sure that ALL work is submitted in a timely manner. I respect your time, please respect mine.
Extra Credit: On a piece of paper write your NAME, DATE, 5th PERIOD, title it ECON Extra Credit and discuss, in a paragraph or two, the importance of Supply, Demand, and Pricing, and how each affects the other. Due by Tuesday March 6, 2012.

US HIST: The School Week Before Spring Break!!!

Well... here we are: the week before Spring Break! Wow does the time move quick!!! The big day of the week is Wednesday where students will take the English/Language Arts (ELA) TAKS from 8am-noon. Make sure you are rested and are going over any work that will help you with this standardized test! I wish you the best of luck and I hope I get to hear lots of great results!!!
In class, (Monday) we will go over the Chapter 21 handouts we have been working on (these will really help prepare you, skills wise, for the TAKS exam on Wednesday!!!), take a Chapter 21 Quiz (Tuesday) and work on Chapters 22-23 (Thursday and Friday). I know you are busy and stressed a little, but continue to work hard! So many of my students are doing such great work (keep it up - not much longer until a nice break)! Please check your GRADESPEED when you have a chance - there are some who are missing assignments and I don't want anyone to go in to Spring Break worrying about failing!!!
P.S. US HIST: If you would like extra credit on Tuesday's Chapter 21 QUIZ, here you go: On a piece of paper, write your NAME, DATE, AND PERIOD, title it Chapter 21 Extra Credit, and write about something that you learned in Chapter 21 and its importance (in a paragraph). This will be for a FREE 100 on the classwork of your choosing (good extra credit for good work that will help towards your TAKS exam) and is due by Tuesday March 6, 2012.

After School Movie Extra Credit Opportunity
